Q:.
Why does my email server setting change to "localhost" and the user field to
"username/popserver name"?
A:
When using certain email
client programs, PC-cillin 2000 changes the POP or Post Office Protocol
server settings to
"localhost"
and the username field or box to
"username/pop server name".
This issue has been reported for the following email clients:
- Microsoft Outlook
2000
- Microsoft Outlook
Express
- Netscape Messenger
After the changes have been made, the user receives an error message
when attempting to check or send email messages. |
This issue occurs
because PC-cillin 2000's POP3 Scan functions like a proxy between
the e-mail client and the POP3 server. In order to perform this
function, PC-cillin 2000 needs to change the email clients' settings
as follows:
POP3 server : "localhost"
Username : "original username/original POP3 server name"
Example:
If the original POP3 server is "mailserver.com", and the
username is "username," the settings will be modified as
follows:
POP3 server : localhost
Username : username/mailserver.com
Normally, this should not create any issues for the user. However,
if any issues connecting to your mail server are encountered, Trend
Micro recommends the following workarounds:
A.
Update PC-cillin
1.
In the Windows
desktop, open the PC-cillin main program by clicking Start >
Programs > Trend PC-cillin 2000 > Trend PC-cillin 2000.
2.
In the menu bar,
click File > Update > Update Now.
3.
Select "Update Now
From Internet (program and pattern file)", then click "Next".
B.
Define the PC-cillin
Port
By default, PC-cillin communicates through port 110 and does not
have to be defined in PCC2K95.INI (for Win 95/98/ME) or
PCC2KNT.INI (for Win NT Workstation & 2000 Pro). However, the
program sometimes fails to recognize that it is supposed to
communicate through port 110, and needs to be reconfigured as
follows:
1.
Go to the Windows
folder, which depends on the version of the Windows operating
system being used:
For Windows 95 / 98 / ME : :\Windows
For Windows NT Workstation & 2000 Pro : :\Winnt
2.
Find the
Pcc2K95.ini (for Win 95/98/ME) or Pcc2knt.ini (for Win
NT/2KPro) file and open it using a text editor (e.g. Notepad).
3.
Scroll down to the
[POP3] section.
If editing the pcc2knt.ini file, create or add a [POP3]
section, which by default, is unavailable or not present in
this file.
4.
Under the [POP3]
section, add or type the following lines:
ListenPort=110
ConnectPort=110
5.
Save the modified
Pcc2K95.ini (for Win 95/98/ME) or Pcc2knt.ini (for Win
NT/2KPro) file.
6.
Reboot the
computer.
7.
Check your email.
Messages should be received with server setting set to "localhost".
Important
If the issue persists after performing the above workarounds, create
a mailtrap.log file using the following procedure:
1.
Download the attached
mailtrap.log file into the PC-cillin program directory.
For Win 95/98/ME : C:\Program Files\Trend PC-cillin 2000
For Win NT/2KPro : C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\PC-cillin 2000
2.
Replicate the POP3
issue by attempting to send or receive emails.
Note: Check and make sure that PC-cillin's POP3 scan is enabled.
3.
After the error has
occured, go to the PC-cillin program directory and check if the
file size of mailtrap.log increased.
Note: The default file size of the attached
mailtrap.log
is 0 bytes.
The file size should change because it records information
regarding the POP3Trap activities performed by PC-cillin,
including the replicated POP3 issue.
4.
Send the mailtrap.log
file to
retail@trendmicro.com.ph
for further analysis.
5.
Delete the
mailtrap.log file on your computer or move it to another directory
after completing the previous step.
This is because this file actively grows in size as PC-cillin
continuously monitors POP3Trap activity.
